The shaft provides access to and from the tunnel for personnel, machinery and the removal of spoil. The shaft was excavated to two depths - 12 metres and 30 metres - to provide access to the different on and off ramp tunnels at the interchange. An acoustic shed was built in the first half of 2016 to house the shaft and minimise noise, light and dust impacts on the local community. The walls of the shed are made of twin steel layers and include acoustic insulation.
